Lions District 105EA Musical Competition

General Information and Rules of the Competition

The aim of this annual competition is to encourage talented young musicians. The Competition is a series of competitions starting an Club level (if more than one candidate is identified within your area) the winner progresses to the District final with that winner progressing to the Multiple District Competition. At the MD Final (usually held in Birmingham) a candidate will be selected to represent the Multiple District in the Competition held at the venue of the Lions Europa Forum. Prizes are awarded at various levels of the competition.

The Competition year runs from 1st January to 31st December.

It is important that Candidates nominated to enter the District Competition are made aware of the progressive nature of the Competition and can commit to being available to attend both the Multiple District and the Europa Forum Competitions should they be successful.

Candidates must be selected and sponsored by a Lions Club to participate in the Competition.

Where an accompanist is required it is the responsibility of the Candidates to arrange and provide a suitable person in this capacity.

Each Club is responsible for actively supporting their Candidate and agree with them the reimbursement total/method of any costs the Candidates and accompanists (when required) may incur.

To have any prospect of success, a Candidate will need the active support and encouragement of the sponsoring Club. Expenses incurred can correctly be drawn from the Club’s Charity Account and/or covered by local sponsorship.

The selection process of Candidates at Club level shall be at the discretion of the Club (as shall the payment of any Club Prize). This is provided that their Candidate undertakes to enter into all of the later stages of the Competition (if successful) and continues to conform to the requirements of these Rules of Procedure.

Candidates:

Candidates must be not more than 23 years on 1st January in the year of the Competition. Candidates must have been resident in the territory of our Multiple District for at least three years prior to 1st January in the year of the Competition. No previous winner of any Competition at a Lions Europa Forum may participate in this or any subsequent Competitions. Each Club within the District may nominate no more than one Candidate for the Competition. The registration of a Candidate must be sent to the District Youth Entertainer (Music) Officer by 31st December in the year preceding the Competition.

The Competition:

Each Candidate will be required to perform the imposed piece, on the prescribed instrument Candidates will at District and MD level select one additional piece from the repertoire list.

At European level the candidates will play the imposed piece plus two pieces form the repertoire list. The District Competition (final) will be limited to a maximum of one candidate from each region. In the event that the total number of Candidates nominated by Clubs exceeds this number Region or Zone competitions, at the discretion of the District Officer/Governor, will be held to determine the Candidate who should be nominated to proceed to the final District Competition. The travel and meal costs of a Candidate and Accompanist (if required) to attend the Competition, whether at Club, Zone, Region or District finals shall be the responsibility of the sponsoring Club. The costs of organising the Competition, whether at Zone, Region, or the District final, including meal costs for the Judges, will be the responsibility of the District.

District Officers Responsibilities:

The promotion and encouraging all clubs to participate in the Competition Announcing the prescribed instrument and repertoire list by posting information on the District Web Site and/or in the District Newsletter. Announcing the various dates and venues of the Competition as these become known. The District Final must take place before to the 31st March each year. (The Multiple District Competition is required to take place by 31st May in each year and is usually held in April at Birmingham.

The Europa Forum where the international competition is held can occur any time between the beginning of September and the end of November.) Accepting notifications from Clubs of their intention to register a Contestant. The notifications to be made by 31st December in the year of the Competition. Provide a venue and facilities (including practice facilities for the use of Contestants) for an elimination contest, if required. Appointing a panel of judges (not exceeding 2 in number) comprising at least one professional musician/music teachers who may not be closely related to any Contestant.

Notifying the MD Officer the details of our nominated District Candidate into the MD Music Competition. Obtaining sponsorship wherever possible to cover the whole or part of the cost of running the competition at all levels. Liasing with the District Convention committee with a view to them providing time to present the District candidate to Convention and possibly time to play at least one of the pieces.
