Who are the Lions?
LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL MISSION STATEMENT
To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation.
Lions Clubs International began in 1917 when Chicago insurance man Melvin Jones had the idea of joining a group of separate business clubs into one with the goal of serving their communities and the world at large.
His idea rapidly spread throughout the world and today the Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organisation with over 1.4 million members committed to community service. As an organisation every penny collected for charity purposes goes directly to helping others, all administration costs are met directly by the members themselves
South Woodham Ferrers Lions Club was formed in 1989 is part of District 105EA of Multiple District 105 British Isles and Ireland. Since its formation South Woodham Ferrers Lions Club has been active in the local community as well as responding to needs nationally when required. The Club currently has 16 members who meet twice a month, once for a business meeting and the second for a more casual dinner meeting.
Fundraising over the years has taken the form of dances, tombolas and golf days blended with charity boxing matches, supplying hot drinks for early morning commuters and jail breaks.
The club has sent a party of disabled students over to Germany for a swimming gala, provided smoke alarms for the elderly and one-parent families, actively supported the Medic Alert campaign, run free diabetes screening sessions and made donations to many of our local clubs and organisations.
On a wider scale money has been given, through Lions Clubs International, to help people after the Mozambique floods, earthquakes in both Turkey and India and most recently over £16,000 was raised for both short and long term help following the events of September 11th.
The motto of Lions Clubs International is “We Serve” and members of South Woodham Ferrers Lions Club work hard, whilst always remembering to have fun and enjoy ourselves, to achieve this aim.
