The Lions Eyeglasses Recycling Program was adopted as an official service activity of Lions Clubs International in October 1994. The goal of the program is to meet the demand for quality eyeglasses in developing nations. All types of spectacles and sunglasses, prescription and non-prescription are needed. The used spectacles are cleaned, repaired and classified by the prescription. These are then distributed to those in need by Lion volunteers and other organisations hosting optical missions in developing countries. The World Healthy Organisation estimates that the eyesight of one fourth of the worlds population can be improved through the use of corrective lenses. Unfortunately for many, a pair of glasses is both unaffordable and inaccessible Since March 2005 the members of the Lions Club of South Woodham Ferrers have collected in excess of 2800 pairs of glasses. Duffield and Duffield Opticians, in South Woodham Ferrers, have very kindly agreed to have one of our collecting bins in their shop and they are happy to receive any glasses on our behalf.
