Lions Roar - March 2008

Members Day

Although  over 70 members turned out for a very informative Members Day at the St Thomas Moore High School in Westcliff on Sea this may well have been the last of these training days in this format.   New and Seasoned members enjoyed seminars before & after lunch on several subjects with still more information available from the display stands set up in the school assembly hall by District Officers.

The District Team  quizzed the Seasoned Lions  to try and find a solution to the problem of poor attendance for these training days & it was soon apparent that the biggest detracting influence was the cost of transport  followed by venue cost, and then time..  To reduce travelling the possibility of  training sessions in each region was put forward with the venue being arranged by Region Officers and to address the issue of  using quality weekend time they should take place on a weekday evening.   The only difficulty envisaged was that  District Presenters would be on the road to many more  events but they felt if the numbers were there  it would be more than worth it.

A super lunch was provided by Ladies in Red and the day was rounded off with a very amusing closing address from Lion Ed Hall sending already happy punters home happier..

An Ed’s Day Out

Lion Ed Hall is not just an after dinner speaker,  here is seen with Charity Pop Group “Full Circle” presenting joint  cheques to  the Air Ambulance following a successful gig by the group at the Rayleigh Lions Club Charter.

In the second press cutting from the local Lion president Graham Roberts is shown handing over a Crusader Ambulance to John Daniels of St John’s who said

“It will certainly be well used I cannot thank the Lions enough for their kindness”

Volunteers were pleased to receive the vehicle that replaces an older vehicle, it  will be used as an outdoor treatment unit

Lion John said

Our local St John’s Division has provided invaluable first aid cover at many of our events over the years. We are delight to support them in this way”

Wings and Wheels,

Sunday 11th May.

This years Halesworth Lions annual Wings and Wheels will be bigger and more exciting than ever before. For starters we have the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which will involve low level flying by a Spitfire, Hurricane and a Lancaster, weather permitting of course. If that’s not enough to get you excited how about not only watching the antics of Team Guinot wing walkers but actually being able to talk to them and finding out what it’s really like hanging upside down from a bi-plane!!

The fun doesn’t stop there, for the first time we have a main ring which will see the Stannage Motor Cycle Stunts performing throughout the day plus Razz the Clown will be blowing up Aunty Pearl and also mingling with the crowds, so watch out you could find him BEHIND YOU!!

There are already over 50 light air craft of all descriptions booked to land, with over 300 vintage/veteran and classic vehicles lined up to come best thing to do is get there early or you’ll run out of time before you see everything. Bring a picnic or enjoy the refreshments on offer from a wide variety of food stalls, wonder through the amazing array of stalls or just sit back and relax in the wonderful surroundings of Henham Park and enjoy the day.

Wings and Wheels is run by Halesworth Lions Club and all profit goes to charity, they would like to take this opportunity to thank the 6th Earl of Stradbroke for once again letting them use the wonderful setting of Henham Park to stage the event. just off the A12 nr Southwold. Admission is £5 adults and £2.50 under 14’s,  For more information  contact:

Woodbridge Lions Club  enjoyed an informal pub evening  and an illustrated talk by John Goodchild on "Pub Signs".

The plans to commemorate their 25th year and to mark the first anniversary of the loss of  Lion Peter Oswald, one of the Club’s staunchest members should soon be completed. They aim to plant a tree and install a bench in Elmhurst Park, home to many activities down the years.  The Elmhurst Extravaganza - the  curtain raiser to the Spring and Summer season is an afternoon of games stalls and sideshows (and of course, the Whooppee Dipper!) for all the family, this year's event will be on Sunday 4th May. With favourable weather, we hope to see lots of people there.                                                 Lion Peter See Woodbridge Lions Club PRO

Lion Peter Pierce a member of the Swaffham Lions Club will be driving nearly 6000kms to the Arctic and back this year to raise money and awareness for the Parkinson’s Disease Society the UK’s  leading charity dedicated to supporting all people with Parkinson’s, their families, friends and carers.  He intends to travel in his 1958 Triumph TR3a from Norwich to Mo I Rana via the Arctic Highway in Norway.

Peter is self funding the trip but is looking to raise £10,000 for the society in memory of his friend Les Gower who died after a long struggle with the disease in 2007.  To help him on his way the Swaffham Lions Club will be donating £1000.

Ed Note:   Lion Peter intends to set off from the Forum in Norwich at midday on the 14th May, Swaffham Lions will be there to wave him off and also welcome him on his return  on  the 27th, —any support for his fund would be appreciated.

The 11th Annual Lions Swimming Gala for competitors with learning difficulties was held on Saturday 5th April at Crown Pools, Ipswich .

This popular evening drew some 40 competitors, from Felixstowe to Lowestoft and Woolverstone to Wymondham. Ages ranged from 5 to adult, with events for all abilities from walking a width up to 1 length free style.

Every competitor received a medal for participation, with a plentiful supply of bananas and fruit juice to sustain them – some taking part in several events. Lion’s Regional Chairman Peter Button awarded eight trophies for outstanding contributions to the evening.

The event is supported by the Lions Clubs of Felixstowe, Ipswich, Stowmarket and Woodbridge and the Felixstowe Lionesses. (Collectively,  105EA Zone4A) We are delighted this year to acknowledge the support of the innovative New Century Lions, who work across East Anglia , conducting business via e-mail.  It is a great opportunity for the Lions to set aside the inter-Club banter (for a couple of hours at least), with everyone working to ensure that the participants had a great time. It’s been said before, but you can’t put a price on the smiles on the faces of the younger children.  How can they still be grinning with their faces under water? Every Lion has a favourite anecdote to tell of this event, here’s just one:  “A girl of perhaps ten, tired, but still smiling at the end of the evening, draped with medals and clutching a trophy, seeing the Lions badge on my shirt put a damp arm round my neck and whispered “Thank You” – rewarding and affecting at the same time.

We must thank the volunteers from Ipswich Lifesaving Club – a qualified lifesaver accompanied every competitor in the water; the staff of Crown Pools; J J Wilson Fruit Importers, who generously supplied the bananas and  to Margaret and Carole, who so effectively marshalled the start of each event.

Our good wishes to all the competitors, their parents and carers and a special mention to Lion Bill Murton of Ipswich Lions, who coordinated the event.

District Governor’s  10th News letter .

Fellow Lions Family Members,

Danbury Lions Club has now been Chartered, I had the privilege of presenting their Charter to them at their recent celebrations. It is not very often that a District Governor gets such an opportunity to carry out that duty. Congratulations to all the Club members especially all those that were there and shook my hand in welcome. Thanks go to all those involved in the formation of the Club which includes South Woodham Ferrers Lions Club (the mother club) and Lion President Brian Cornell, Lion President Phil Wright, Immediate Past District Governor Lion Brian Stanbridge and the members of the Danbury Lions Club.

Membership numbers are still increasing and I hope we will be able to maintain a steady growth. I am aware that all Clubs are trying to find numbers and I was pleased to be able to induct the Mayor of Mersea into Mersea Island Lions Club at their recent Charter celebrations.

Lions Crew at Work now has the first task, the redecoration of rooms at the Quidenham Hospice in Norfolk. Further projects for the East Anglian Children’s Hospices will be carried out. The date for Quidenham is fluid at present as access to the hospice is dependent upon resident’s requirements. Whilst in discussions with them, they have requested help with their Ride for Life event in Thetford Forest in May. Exact details have not arrived but I will ensure that full details are emailed to the District as soon as I am able. Offers of assistance will be sought from Lions across the District, from discussions, I believe they are looking for Marshals.

Heather and I are currently preparing for our trip to MD Convention in Aberdeen, upon our return I hope I will be able to tell the District that PID Lion Phil has been endorsed as our candidate for Second Vice President. We wish him good luck.

Due to time constraints, I am late with this news letter, details of all new members will be included in our next edition, my apologies to them, one of whom is Lion Heather!.

Thank you all once again for your support and hospitality at both Club meetings and your Charter Celebrations. It is always a great pleasure to meet and great both old and new friends.

DG John
